Vendors love the “W” word, because it means huge mark-ups. I’ve heard vendors rationalize these price increases because brides are more demanding than normal consumers. I don’t think this is true. I am much more demanding about an event for work than I am for my wedding.

In any case, wedding cakes can be very expensive, much more than normal cakes. A dessert bar is a growing trend to replace wedding cakes. Many guests don’t actually like wedding cake. Why not give them a variety of yummy desserts to choose from? If you want to partake in the cutting of the wedding cake tradition, you can always have a small cake just for you two. Or, if having a wedding cake is important for pictures- rent a fake one.

I’ve not YET heard of a vendor marking up a wedding pie or a wedding brownie. If the season was right, I would love an ice cream sundae bar at our wedding…

Bit of a wedding news roundup today. And some… umm… interesting ideas for how you can save money on your wedding.

For starters, how does a naked wedding sound? Sure, it would bring awesome wedding savings for everyone who attends, but be sure you don’t hold the wedding in Winter, or you’ll have some very unhappy guests. Err… not that wouldn’t be happy about it otherwise. And to be fair, I’m pretty sure we’ve all seen enough of Russell Brand close enough to naked to not really want to see anymore!

Interested in seeing what the big trends are in weddings for 2010. Here’s a nice look. My personal fave? Glee-inspired first dance mash-ups. Only one of the greatest wedding first dance ideas of all-time.

And for those of you frugal brides who found your wedding creeping up to the $20,000+ range because of family members who couldn’t keep their mouths shut about invites, here’s a nice story for you. Talk about wedding savings… this couple really had the right idea!

Well, that’s about it for this Monday. Got a big week ahead of us, and I’ve got lots of great wedding advice on tap as I work to make Practically Ever After the best wedding blog on the net. Talk to you tomorrow!

My first (informational) post as editor of Practically Ever After, and although I said I was going to switch the direction a bit away from wedding savings advice, I found an article too good to pass up. Well, it’s actually a three-part blog (with the third post not being released until tomorrow), but I figured I’d go ahead and post it now anyway because the author makes a great point.

Basically, the writer’s trick to wedding savings and how to have a fantastic wedding on the cheap is two-fold: First, do a lot of research; and second, don’t be afraid to make a phone call. You see, in this economy, even the most sought-after wedding vendors — like that great florist who always manages to have the most gorgeous lilies known to man, or the caterer with delicious lobster raviolis — are hurting. And they’re hurting even more because the frugal brides without a huge budget don’t even think they can afford to hire the best. But all it takes is a little research (on places like Google and wedding blogs like Practically Ever After) to find the names of the best wedding vendors in your area. From there, it’s just a matter of picking up the phone, giving the vendor a call, and telling them your budget. Sure, one or two might not want to work with you. But the vast majority of top-shelf wedding vendors will be so grateful for the work, they’ll figure out a way to make your budget work.

And let’s be honest for a moment. Even those beautiful lilies don’t exactly cost the florist the $50 a centerpiece she’s charging you, let alone the $500 she might be charging someone else, so it’s not like she’s not making a profit

If you’d like to read the entire article (and all three parts), you can go check out “My Mac Book Pro Bride” here. And if you’d like to save thousands of dollars on even the best wedding vendors, remember one thing: Make a phone call. It can’t hurt!
