Crisis, crisis, crisis! How in the world can I get married now! This, I believe, is what most couples with tight budgets are thinking right now just as they’ve gotten engaged and are scheduled to get married during these trying times. How do you even think of getting hitched when the country is in the midst of a colossal financial crisis the size of Texas and is covering the whole world with an economic dark cloud.

We didn’t see it coming. Some have warned us about it, but we never listened. Now, everybody is paying the price. So, you’re asking, “Am I going to marry the man I love or do I just get a dog?”

When God created humans, he placed a vital part called the brain in our head. He just didn’t include a manual so most of us don’t know how to use it properly. The brain is our weapon, it is very useful and quite effective. We just need to use it well. So, by using your wits, there should be no reason why you can’t get around this crisis and continue your wedding plans without any fuss.

As my gift on your special day, allow me to give you a few wedding tips on how to have an awesome, but inexpensive wedding. If you plan your wedding well, not even a gargantuan crisis can ever stop you from walking down that aisle.

Here are some tips on how to have an affordable, but memorable wedding celebration.

1. Plan your wedding well. First thing you can do is get a wedding planner. She/he can help you in planning your wedding well. According to Costofwedding.com, on average, American couples spend $ 20,398 for their wedding. That should include the fee of the wedding planner. You should consider hiring a planner who is paid by percentage. Some wedding planners base their fees on the total bridal budget, and take between 10 and 15 percent. Now, if you trim your budget off of some areas of your wedding, the fee of your wedding planner should go down as well.
2. Invite important people only. Make a list of the people you want to invite. Make 3 columns where you can write names of potential guests. First column are the people who need to be in the wedding party, like the groom, who’s not a guest. So this column is for the couple’s immediate family members and the bridal entourage. Second column is for the people who will kill you if you don’t invite them. These are your best friends, poker buddies, really close officemates or boss (only if he promises to give you a raise). These are mostly, non-relations you always go out with or who are always there when you need help. Third column will be people who don’t really make a difference if they’re there or not. Write their names there, tear off that whole column, and flush it down the toilet. You’ll live even if you don’t see them on your wedding day. If you can get away with inviting only the ones in column one, that would be super!
3. Make your own wedding favors. There are a lot of DIY wedding favors you can find on the net. Choose the one you think is unique and make them yourself. Do it with your friends, neighbors, or relatives who are willing to lend a helping hand, or drag someone who owes you. DIY wedding favors are not only very cheap and personal, but you’ll also have fun making them. This will surely give you the wedding savings you are looking for.
4. Know where to get a nice but cheap wedding dress. You can always use what your mother wore on her wedding day, all you have to do is alter it and voila! Perfect fit. You can also go for a rent-a-wedding gown. It’ll save you a lot to just rent a gown that you will use only once (hopefully). Websites like Craigslist and ebay are also a great source for cheap wedding dresses. No one will know you are wearing a hand-me-down-gown, unless you invite the previous owner (like that’s gonna happen). As for wearing your mom’s gown, that’s always a sweet, touching – not to mention popular – option.
5. Food. Unless you can ask your guests to have a pot-luck or eat heavy before the wedding, have a heart-to-heart talk with your caterer. Tell them your budget, and ask them what they can do to help you bring down costs (show tears for greater effect). You can also ask them if they will allow you to provide your own drinks to minimize overhead. Oh, and don’t forget to seriously consider tip number 2.
